Definition: A tattoo needle is actually (usually) a group of several small needles called sharps attached to a needle bar.

Examples: Needles can be made in groups of 3, 5, 7 or more, depending on what the artist is comfortable with and what the design calls for. Occasionally, a single needle can be used for fine lining, but this is not very common. The sharps are soldered to a needle bar, and the bar is placed in the tattoo machine through a tube. Needle groups also come in different shapes such as round (for lining) and flat (for shading).
Liner
Definition: A liner is a needle or group of needles used to create the outline of a tattoo.

Examples: Although a single needle can sometimes be used for fine lining, a liner is usually a group of at least 3 very small needles called sharps. Needle groups can be as many as 9 or more, depending on the thickness of the outline to be made. The needles are shaped in a circular pattern, which is why they are also commonly called a round.

Definition: A shader is a group of needles used for filling in and shading a tattoo.

Examples: Shaders are generally two rows of needle sharps spaced intermitantly in a flat shape. A shader, or magnum, can be a group of needles as many as 9 or more. These are used for filling in color, blending and shading a tattoo after the outline has been done.

Q: Do Disposable Needles and Tubes Promise a Safe Tattoo or Piercing?
A: Some say an autoclave is not necessary, especially when disposable needles and tubes are also readily available. Each customer gets their own one-time-use needle and tube, so there is no risk of exposure. Sounds good, doesn’t it? The problem, though, is that needles and tubes are not the only culprits in spreading disease. There are so many other things that can be handled wrongly by an inexperienced person that hasn’t been properly trained.
Q: Hi there, I have a question or two for you. I have 10 tattoos and they have all been done by the same person. I am getting my 11th on Friday and apparently she has switched to disposable needles, and they are plastic....or something.... I am wondering what the difference is between metal and plastic, other than the obvious. I was told that it hurts alot more with a plastic one than with the normal needle. A: Unless there is some new product out that I've never heard of, disposable needles should still be metal. The disposable grip tubes are lexan plastic, but not the needles. So, the pain should be no different. Plastic would not be able to properly pierce the skin - I think someone has given you some wrong information.
